"Do you think things happen for a reason?"

Sat, 08/13/2011 - 11:10 |  voice

I just answered a poll for the day on a random website.  The question: "Do you think things happen for a reason?"  I responded:; then it shows me the results of everyone else so far today.

August Cuties

8/8/2011

Chelsea wanted to help by doing the dishes.  A little while later...

"Oh Mommy!  Mommy!  A big bubble on me!"

Her hand was covered in bubbles -- oh, no!  I handed her a towel to remedy the situation.

Zac washed dishes today as well.  With lots of fanfare, and lots(!!) of bubbles.

Bugs and Beetles and Bathroom Humor

Mon, 07/25/2011 - 22:28 |  aphillips

Last night, Paul and I were standing out on the porch outside the front door and something large and black caught my eye on the wall.  It was the biggest beetle I have ever seen in person, EVER!  Well...this even at least had to be memorialized in photography!  Out comes the Droid X!

Social Problems: Unemployment

Sat, 01/01/2011 - 23:49 |  voice

Being a person who has been at least partially self-employed since I graduated from college, unemployment creates a conundrum for me.  If one of my businesses is not generating enough income, I start brain-storming resolutions and find a way to solve the problem.  However, not everyone in society is necessarily going to be able to turn unemployment into self-employement.

Social Problems: Retirement

Sat, 01/01/2011 - 23:18 |  voice

Very unsurprising -- I read an article today about problems in the public sector regarding employees:

Local goverments, on every level, have been failing to fund pension funds for their employees.

Response to person who wants to repeal "Obamacare", because his COBRA premium is so high...

Mon, 12/13/2010 - 22:32 |  voice

And that, THAT, is precisely the point.  COBRA is only a couple percentage points above what the company providing the health insurance ACTUALLY PAYS.  You must have had a pretty decent plan.  To get a comparable plan out in today's market on your own, it will likely cost you AT LEAST the $1900/mo asked for the COBRA payment -- or more -- and that is only if you and all members of your family are in optimum health with no pre-existing conditions (except children, who can't be denied for pre-existing conditions anymore).

Response to the idea of simply ending "The Fed" to stop it from monitoring and bolstering inflation

Sun, 11/21/2010 - 00:28 |  voice

I truly wish it were as simple as abolishing the "Fed" and stopping all inflation.  Unfortunately, in a system that depends on credit that is lent with interest, deflation would be ruinous to many normal folks.  For example, right now, like most home-owners in Phoenix, AZ, we are underwater in our mortgage.  At first, our home more than doubled in value -- and we refinanced, taking out a modest sum (no where near the full value at that time) to build our master bathroom, and put in the front and back yards.  Now, the house has deflated in value to what we originally

Zachary the gentleman, Chelsea learns to greet, and Christopher the super-helper

Sun, 11/21/2010 - 00:05 |  aphillips

11/20/2010

We made cranberry wine today and Christopher was right there, helping and watching.  "Don't you want to go watch a wee, christopher?"  "No," said Chris.  He wanted to stay right where he was, helping, participating.  What a delight.  Later he went with Mommy to the store.  Christopher scanned all of the juice on the self-checkout.  Mommy loves taking Christopher shopping with her!

Poverty and Wealth

Mon, 11/08/2010 - 17:29 |  voice

There are some people in this world who fault those who are poor because they blame “the poor” for their own poverty.  They start their litany:

<?xml:namespace prefix = o /> They are poor because they

  • don’t work hard, are lazy

  • didn’t bother getting a good education

  • make foolish life decisions

  • are stupid

  • prefer a handout
